Today's musical
recommendation - "My Body is a Cage" by Peter Gabriel

much but just close your eyes and let the instruments, the words, and his voice
wash over you.....I dare you not to feel something inside

I had an entirely different topic picked for today's post and
it changed in a heartbeat when I took a moment and watched the trailer for
"John Carter" on IMDB.
I read the series by Edgar Rice Burroughs when I was in high
school so seeing a trailer for the movie made me curious about how they took a
wonderful sci-fi opera and made it into a movie. Jury will be out on this as it
doesn't release until 2012 but the one thing that grabbed me was the main title
song "My Body is a Cage" by Peter Gabriel.
As I sat there watching the trailer the music rolled over me
and I could feel my emotions stirring inside and it made me decide to talk
about music..........
Have you ever heard a song and literally stopped in your
tracks and let yourself become lost in the melody, the rhythm of the
instruments, the sound of the voices.....for me this is one of those songs.
I don't pretend to be an expert on music but I know that it
has the ability to raise my senses when I'm feeling down, to make me stop and
think about what is going on around me, to let loose my inner beast if you will
when the beat is such that I can feel my heart pounding.
The right song can change my line of thinking, get me to look
outside the box, and on more than one occasion bring a tear to my eyes.
I tend to lean more towards Alternative than anything else but
can name at least one artist or composition in almost every genre that I enjoy
and you'll find either on my iPod or iTunes.
It is easy to follow one genre but you risk losing so
much......Rap may not be your cup of tea but there are some incredible songs
out there that can make you feel so alive and question all that goes on around
you...
Eminem's "Not Afraid" moves me like I never thought
possible.
Johnny Cash's performance of Nine Inch Nails "Hurt"
is another that can rip a hole inside you if you let it.
Faith Hill's Breathe reaffirms for me that we can all feel
love so deep that it literally leaves us breathless and gasping for air
"Come and Goes" by Greg Laswell had me sobbing as I
watched the trailer on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtmiLdzzgGE) the
song is at (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEFxfVyz4Uc)
There are times when my mood gets dark and I lose myself in
music.....it comforts me, it nurtures me, it helps me to continue to have clear
eyes and an open heart, it brings me back from the edge of the abyss........it
helped me sit by my son's bedside while he spent time in CHEO.......music never
leaves you........it can't......it is part of who we are as a
species........embrace this special gift from the heavens
I've introduced my children to music they never would have
considered on their own.....Trans Siberian Orchestra was an incredible concert
with my daughter and The Foo Fighters rocked out Scotia Bank Place in 2008 and
my 8 y/o son was there with me standing on his seat the entire time singing
every song with Dave Grohl much to the amazement and joy of everyone around
us....both of them have heard Metalica's "Enter Sandman" and know
that the night holds no terror you can't keep out with a clear mind.......
What does music mean to you?
What artists or songs make you quiver inside?
